Oymyakon: Minus Seventy — and Life Goes On

In nineteen twenty-six, a geologist named Sergei Obruchev traveled to this corner of Siberia and recorded a temperature of minus seventy-one point two degrees. Weather scientists never officially accepted the reading. The locals didn't wait for them — they carved the number into a stone pillar in the middle of the village. As far as they're concerned, that settled it.

There it stands, that pillar, right in the snow — and the figure on it is one you almost hesitate to say out loud. This isn't the record of some abandoned weather post, either. It's the record of a place where people actually live: about five hundred of them, herding reindeer, running a market, sending kids to school. Those kids walk to class down to minus fifty-five. At minus fifty-six, the older students are officially sent home. It's not an act of endurance — it's just the timetable.

Cars here are never switched off in winter. Turn one off, and by morning you'd be thawing the engine with an open fire, like nursing along something half-frozen — and even then it might not start. Fish pulled from the Indigirka River is sold frozen solid, like a block of ice; people break off pieces and eat it raw, sliced paper-thin, the way it's done across the Russian North — it melts on the tongue before you've even noticed the cold.

And for all that, the name "Oymyakon" itself means "unfreezing spring." Just outside the village, a hot spring keeps flowing at around thirty degrees above zero — open water, whatever the frost outside. The place is named after the one thing here that never freezes.

Every spring, Father Christmases from around the world make the trip out here just to pose for photos by that pillar. The local children watch politely. They're the ones who actually know what real cold looks like.
