Twice, deep beneath this ground, someone set off a nuclear charge. Not as a weapon — as a tool. Nineteen seventy-one and nineteen seventy-four: two underground nuclear blasts, meant simply to probe what lay below. The city got no special status for it, no attention. Just another work site. And that, really, sums up the logic of Vorkuta from the start — a place people used, but never cared for.

It was built by Gulag prisoners in the nineteen-thirties — Stalin's forced-labor camp system. They weren't invited here; they were shipped in. The coal was needed for the great industrial push, then for the war, then for the country that followed. Thirteen major mines, a Soviet order of merit for labor, and, by the end of the Soviet era, close to one hundred fifteen thousand residents. Today the real number is thirty or forty thousand at most — the rest still exist on paper, registered here but long since settled south, beyond the Arctic Circle. Vorkuta has lost nearly seventy percent of its population in thirty years. No city in Russia has emptied out faster.

And it's not just empty apartments. Whole districts, entire rings of housing around the center, have simply been switched off. A handful of families left in buildings with dozens of units, stairwells with no lights, concrete panels cracking in the cold. And yet — the streets are clean. The people who stayed keep their space in order. Not because anyone tells them to. Because this is their north, and it still matters to them.

Coal mining here is slated to continue to around two thousand thirty-seven. Locals say the date out loud like it might be a verdict. And yet some who leave come back: "out there it's warm," they say, "but none of it's mine." Vorkuta is a city slowly saying goodbye to itself — and somehow, still, someone's home.

What should we tell you about? Your own street would do. moygid dot online.
