The Jellyfish That Refuses to Die

The nineteen-nineties. A research lab on the shores of the Mediterranean. Biologist Ferdinando Boero looks into a tank — and can't quite believe what he's seeing. An adult jellyfish, one that's already reproduced, isn't dying. It's... shrinking. The tentacles dissolve. The bell caves in. And the creature turns back into the tiny polyp it once grew from.

This was Turritopsis dohrnii. Four to five millimetres across. Almost see-through, like a drop of dew on glass. Up to that point, nothing special at all.

The mechanism is called transdifferentiation: mature cells suddenly "forget" what they specialize in and start acting like stem cells. A skin cell from the dome becomes a polyp cell. A muscle cell turns into something else entirely. The arrow of time runs backward. And from that polyp, new jellyfish bud off again — clones of the very animal that decided not to die.

What's striking is what triggers the cycle: stress. Starvation, a sudden shift in temperature, damage to the bell. Where most animals would start to fail, Turritopsis simply resets its age to zero.

Its genome carries twice as many DNA-repair genes as its closest relatives. That's exactly why scientists now study it as a model for cell aging — and for cancer.

It's since turned up in every warm sea on the planet, carried there in the ballast water of cargo ships. Tiny, invisible, everywhere.

Death isn't written into its code. The world is simply full of things ready to eat it.
