Its tissue produces hyaluronic acid of an unusually high molecular weight — it thickens the matrix between cells and acts as a literal physical wall against tumors. That's why cancer is almost unheard of in this animal. Its skin lacks substance P, the nerve signal that carries pain to the brain in other mammals — the receptors are there, but the wiring's been cut. Inside its cells, a protein called cGAS, instead of triggering inflammation, boosts DNA repair. Three separate mechanisms, all working against aging at once.

Large colonies are kept today in the United States, Germany, Israel, and Russia. Geneticists are already inserting fragments of its genes into mouse cells. Bioengineers are studying how its trick of staying frozen in a youthful stage might be carried over into human biology.
