Karachi, the 1950s. On a street crowded with rickshaws and tea stalls stands a battered old van. Behind the wheel: a young man in a grey wool cap. Instead, he took what people could give: sheep from herders, half a day's earnings from tea-stall owners. One poor woman once brought him a bracelet and a pair of earrings — he wrote her into the donor ledger as the maternity ward's "chief sponsor" for that day.

When intelligence officers raided his office in the 1980s, Edhi said nothing. He just took off his worn grey cap and held it out to them: "Here — this is everything I've stolen from the people."

His shelters never asked what religion you were. His morgues buried the nameless for free. On the baskets he left out for abandoned babies, the words read: "Don't kill the child — leave it here instead." He himself owned no car, no house of his own — just a two-room flat above an ambulance station, and that same grey cap.

When he was buried in 2016, soldiers stood beside Islamist clerics, liberals beside the poor. On the old vans, people still chalk the words: "Service to humanity comes before religion."

It may be the truest self-portrait ever left by a man no one could ever buy.
