The Man Who Said Nothing

In December of nineteen thirty-eight, Nicholas Winton packed for a skiing holiday — and ended up instead in a Prague hotel room, facing a line of parents with one request each: take my child.
Winton was a London stockbroker. No title, no official mandate. He sat at a table sorting papers, drawing up lists — child's name, age, parents' names. Back in London, he took the letterhead of an existing refugee organization and simply added the words "children's section," then made himself chairman. The British government would only let the children in under strict terms: a host family, a fifty-pound guarantee, a ticket. So he wrote to strangers across the country, asking them to take in a child they'd never met.
Eight trains got out. The ninth didn't. On the first of September nineteen thirty-nine, with two hundred fifty more children already holding their papers, Germany invaded Poland. The borders shut. Winton would later call that day the greatest failure of his life.
For fifty years, he told no one. A notebook with the names of six hundred sixty-nine children sat in his attic until the late nineteen-eighties, when his wife found it and brought it to the BBC. On a television program called That's Life, the host turned to the studio audience and asked: is there anyone here whose life was saved by Nicholas Winton? The entire room stood. He was sitting in the front row, holding his hat on his knees.
Historians later worked out that those six hundred sixty-nine children left behind roughly fifteen thousand descendants. Winton died in twenty fifteen, at the age of one hundred six. Right up until the end, strangers kept showing up at his door with flowers — bringing their grandchildren to meet the man whose signature on a piece of paper had once outweighed a closed border.
The world is enormous and one question is enough to start. moygid dot online.
