A Striped Shadow in the Snow

Picture this: minus thirty degrees, a pine forest crusted in snow, the frozen ground creaking underfoot — and suddenly, a trail of massive prints cuts across the snow. Each paw as wide as a human palm. A Siberian tiger has just walked through.

He's the only tiger on Earth built for snow. Not just surviving it — thriving in it: a coat thicker and longer than his tropical cousins', broad paws that work like snowshoes, a layer of fat that keeps him warm through weeks of frost. A grown male weighs around two hundred kilograms — the heaviest of any big cat on the planet. And when he charges, he hits eighty kilometers an hour.

But through the twentieth century, this animal was pushed to the edge of extinction. By the nineteen-thirties, fewer than thirty were left in Russia's Far East. Hunting was banned only in nineteen forty-seven — yet for twenty years after that, cubs were still being trapped by the hundreds for zoos. Poachers killed at least a hundred and thirty-eight tigers through the sixties and seventies alone. Some years, the wild population dropped by more than a fifth.

Today there are around seven hundred and fifty of them. It's a cautious kind of success: protected land now covers a quarter of their range, and poaching is prosecuted hard. Ninety percent of the population lives in the forested foothills of the Sikhote-Alin range, in Russia's Far East — biologists there know every single tiger by sight, from the unique pattern of its stripes.
