A Hundred Years on the Riverbank

In eighteen eighty-eight, a young painter named Isaac Levitan was sailing down the Volga River by steamboat when he passed a small town called Plyos. He stepped ashore — and never really left. It wasn't planned. He simply saw the light over the water and knew he had to paint it. That one moment turned a sleepy provincial town — home today to about two thousand people — into a place every art-loving Russian knows by name.

By then Plyos had already lived seven and a half centuries of history: it first appears in a Novgorod chronicle in eleven forty-one. The town had its turn as a trading post, then as a small industrial center, before settling into quiet. And that quiet turned out to be its greatest asset — no Soviet-era rebuilding, no factory noise. Those hills you can still see today, topped with church silhouettes, look almost exactly as Levitan painted them.

Over three summers here, he produced around two hundred works. The idea for his best-known painting, "Above Eternal Peace," had actually come to him earlier, in eighteen eighty-five, near Moscow — but it was on the Volga that the final composition fell into place. Levitan didn't travel alone: with him were fellow painters Sofia Kuvshinnikova and Alexei Stepanov.

Word spread, and other major Russian painters followed — Repin, Savrasov, Aladzhalov, Vinogradov, Korin. By the nineteen-thirties, Plyos had become a genuine artists' colony, with galleries and studios of its own. One single landscape had set off a migration of talent that lasted decades.

The town's museum-reserve still runs open-air painting sessions today, drawing artists from across the country and abroad. Plyos isn't just preserving a reputation — it's still making one.

Two centuries ago, there was nothing here but water, hills, and a particular quality of light. As it turned out, that was enough.
