The Town a Mouse Saved

January, nineteen ninety-one. The Volga River lies under ice. A small town on its banks — five thousand people, industrial pipelines, oil-pumping stations — gets its city status back. And on almost the same day, a handful of local history buffs make a decision that will change everything.
The legend here is older than any building in town. A prince from the Mstislavsky family lay down by the riverbank after a hunt... a mouse ran across his face, he jumped up in irritation — and saw a venomous snake right beside him. The mouse had saved his life. He ordered a chapel built and the settlement named Myshkin — "Mouse-town." For centuries, that was little more than a local joke.
Then, suddenly, it became an asset. The town's enthusiasts asked themselves: what if we became the town a mouse literally saved? And what if it could save us again — this time from provincial obscurity?
Here's the thing: in the early nineties, this town opened the world's only Museum of the Mouse. It started almost as a garage project — toys, figurines, ceramics. Visitors began bringing mouse trinkets from all over the world, and the collection grew into the thousands. Passengers on river cruise boats started asking travel agents directly: will we stop at that mouse town? Today, more than two hundred thousand people visit every year. For a town of five thousand residents, there are over twenty museums. And the smell of fresh gingerbread baked in the shape of mice, sold on the market square, never quite fades — not even in November.
A small symbol turned out to be stronger than any industrial strategy. The mouse from the legend became a working tool — proof that a small provincial town can rewrite its own story, if it finds the right image within it.
