The Sky, From the Inside

Have you ever wondered what's actually up there in that painting? Not "a night sky" in general — but one particular sky, over one particular place, on one particular night?

Van Gogh painted "The Starry Night" in June, eighteen eighty-nine, in a psychiatric asylum called Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, near the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the south of France. The view is from the east-facing window of his room. He described this sky in letters to his brother Theo — the hills, the coming dawn, a bright "morning star" low on the horizon. Two centuries later, astronomers cross-checked the dates, the direction the window faced, and star charts from the time — and confirmed it: that star above the hills, to the right of the cypress tree, is Venus. One specific planet, on one specific May morning.

But here's where it gets stranger. In two thousand six, a group of physicists compared the swirling patterns in the sky to mathematical models of turbulence — the chaotic motion of gas and fluid. The density, the scale, the rhythm of the brushstrokes all lined up with the equations. A painter with no training in physics, confined in an asylum, had somehow captured, by instinct, one of the most complex kinds of motion science was only beginning to describe.

The village below, by the way, isn't the one he actually saw from his window. Van Gogh added a church spire straight out of the Netherlands — folding his own northern childhood into this southern French landscape.

Van Gogh himself considered the painting a failure — too far from real life, too fantastical. It never sold while he was alive. Since nineteen forty-one, it's hung in the Museum of Modern Art in New York — and it's the single painting thousands of people line up to see there every day.

The asylum near Saint-Rémy is still open today — it treats patients, and it welcomes art pilgrims. That very window is still there to see.
