Here's something strange. Lake Baikal is the deepest lake on Earth, and its water is so clear you can see thirty, forty meters down. Like looking not into water, but into air. But the Buryat people, native to this part of Siberia, never explained that with depth or cold. They said: there is a master spirit, and he watches. That's where Olkhon begins — right at the gap between science and a living presence.

Look at this water. It's almost colorless, with a faint blue tint — like glass that's spent too long in the light. Scientists explain the clarity simply enough: the water is poor in organic matter, cold, nearly free of sediment, and tiny filter-feeding organisms have been doing their work for millions of years. But in Olkhon's legends, it's the wind — an aide to Khan Khoto Babai, spirit-master of Baikal, one of the "sons of heaven." He blows everything unwanted out of the lake, never lets impurity settle. So throwing rubbish into Baikal here at Olkhon isn't just careless. It's a direct insult to the one who has kept watch over its purity for centuries.

Khan Khoto Babai lives here, on Cape Burkhan. See this rock — Shaman Rock? Two marble pillars rising from the water, dark, almost black with age and wind, and a narrow cave running clean through between them. Legend says one of the spirit-master's three homes is inside. A heavenly palace, an underground one — and this one, the earthly one, right here in the rock above Baikal. That's why thirteen wooden posts, called serge, stand at its foot — hitching posts for spirits. People tie colored ribbons to them, leave milk, vodka, fat. The thirteen posts mark the thirteen heavenly lords, sons of the sky gods, who came down here to pass judgment on people. And by Buryat belief, that judgment never stopped.

Local shamans never turn their back on Shaman Rock. Never. It isn't superstition — it's protocol. The spirit reads a turned back as disrespect.

Khan Khoto Babai's son, Khan Shubuu Noyon, appeared to people in the form of a white-headed eagle. He was the first shaman, given his gift by the sky god Tengri, and it was through him that shamanic knowledge of the three worlds — heaven, earth, and the underworld — first passed to people. On Mount Zhima, according to the ethnographic notes of Matvei Khangalov, lived an eagle said to be the ancestor of all the white-headed eagles of Olkhon — living go-betweens linking people and the sky. When you see an eagle overhead here, know that this is how the Buryats saw it too.

The steppe of Olkhon is something else entirely. Forget the thick Siberian forest most people picture: the island's interior is dry, wind-scoured plateau — feather grass, scattered larch trees, dust in summer, a cutting wind in winter. Bare openness. Shamans valued the place for exactly that: spirits don't hide in the trees here, you can see them. Any low mound on these plateaus could be an ancient burial site. Custom says: don't touch the stone circles and mounds, and don't photograph them without first asking the spirits' permission.

For a long time, Olkhon stayed the last stronghold of pure shamanic practice. When Buddhism swept through Mongolia and the Transbaikal region between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, those who didn't want to become lamas retreated here. The island's isolation became its shield. People still make offerings here today — fat, milk, tobacco, rolling burning embers — an old, wordless language that Baikal's spirits, they say, have understood since the beginning.

Ask me about the swan maiden of Baikal and the hunter Khoridoi — father of the Buryat people. I know why that story starts right here, by water so clear it looks like air... but that's a tour for another time.
