A Planet in Deep Freeze

Here's a paradox for you. This place is called a mammoth graveyard — but it turns out to be more of a processing plant. The Berelyokh site, on a tributary of the Indigirka River in Siberia, was long thought to be a natural trap: a herd blundered into a bog, froze, and that was that. But in twenty twenty-four, researchers confirmed it once and for all — the bones were brought there. By people. On purpose. Again and again, every two to four hundred years, hunters came back to this exact spot, almost like a rotating shift on a job site. Upper Paleolithic hunters — already working seasonal shifts, out here in the depths of the Kolyma region.
And they weren't hunting for meat, as it happens — they were after tusks. Ivory was strategic material back then: it was worked into long spear points, the era's key weapon. But to get a tusk out of a skull, you first have to break down the soft tissue. And this is where the permafrost works like a piece of technology: the skulls were laid straight into the boggy riverbed, where microorganisms did the messy work for them. A prehistoric processing station, built by nature.
This is the planet's great freezer because the permafrost here runs hundreds of metres deep and has held for tens of thousands of years. And the rivers — the Kolyma, the Indigirka, the Berezovka — cut into the banks, slicing through the frozen layers like a knife through a cake. It was from one such riverbank that, in nineteen hundred, a hunter named Tarabukin pulled out a mammoth with its fur, its skin, even its stomach contents still intact — and the Kolyma became "mammoth country" for scientists the world over.
Now that freezer is thawing. The riverbanks are collapsing, and more finds are surfacing than ever — but exposed to open air, the soft tissue breaks down within a few short years. The planet is opening its archive and destroying it, in the very same breath.
