In the summer of two thousand twenty-four, in Russia's Verkhoyansk district — deep in Siberia, close to the coldest inhabited place on Earth — people spotted something odd in a thawing riverbank: a brown, leathery shape poking out of the frozen ground. It turned out to be a trunk.

They named the calf Yana. She stood about one hundred twenty centimetres at the shoulder and weighed roughly one hundred eighty kilograms. Radiocarbon dating put her age at around fifty thousand years. A one-year-old calf, dead long before the first farmers ever worked the land — and preserved whole: fur, skin, soft tissue, all of it.

That's what makes Siberia's permafrost — ground that stays frozen year-round — so extraordinary. It doesn't just bury things. It stops time. From the stomach contents of mammoths found here, scientists can reconstruct the animal's very last meal down to the season: sedges, grasses from an ancient dry steppe, leaves barely digested. That's how researchers learned mammoths actually lived on open, dry grassland — not in snowy forest, as long assumed.

And here's the thing: Yana is now being thawed and refrozen, piece by piece, over and over — so each organ can be studied in turn without damaging the rest. One calf has become a shared project for dozens of specialists, from microbiologists to climate scientists.

But there's another side to this. Inside these carcasses, scientists are also finding parasite eggs, traces of ancient infections, bacteria. As the permafrost melts, all of that resurfaces too. Researchers are now seriously debating the biosafety risks of handling finds like this.

The permafrost is thawing faster every year — and that means more discoveries like Yana. It's a golden age for science, and, at the very same time, a running clock on a warming planet.

The world is enormous and one question is enough to start. moygid dot online.
