There's a strange contradiction to this place. Fly out of Moscow, and in a couple of hours you're standing above the Arctic Circle, in one of the most powerful aurora zones on the planet. Not Iceland, not Canada's Yukon — the Kola Peninsula, in Russia's far north. The city of Murmansk sits at sixty-nine degrees latitude, and almost every flare on the Sun's surface translates, almost directly, into a flare in the sky overhead.

The aurora itself begins above one hundred kilometers up — higher than the clouds, higher than airplanes fly. So when the sky over the Barents Sea looks like a flat grey sheet, light may already be blazing behind it. It's simply hidden behind a curtain of water vapor. The red arcs that sometimes rise above the green ones reach almost three hundred kilometers up — nearly the edge of space.

The best season isn't January, as most people assume. It's autumn, from mid-September on: the cold is still bearable, the nights are already long, and the sky "switches on" roughly between ten at night and three in the morning.

And now — listen closely. People who've stood far from any road, in total silence, have sometimes heard something: a faint crackling, almost like electric static. As if a wire were stretched taut between the hills. It's been recorded in only about five percent of cases — but the Sámi, herders and fishermen who've lived here for generations, say they've heard it far more often.

The Sámi, the Indigenous people of the Kola Peninsula, never treated the aurora as mere spectacle. To them, it's the souls of ancestors. Whistling beneath it is forbidden — a crude insult to the dead. On the sacred hills, even those who no longer hold the old beliefs still honor that rule, simply out of respect for the memory the place carries.

The sky here dances. But maybe it also remembers.

If you leave with more questions than you came with, that was the idea. The answers and the map live at moygid dot online.
