The Light That Never Fades
Let's start with a paradox. For some people, this light is a celebration. For others, it's been a professional headache. Astronomers just outside St. Petersburg dread it: from late May to mid-July, the sky never gets dark enough. The faint stars vanish, and serious observation has to wait until August.
So here's the whole contradiction in one breath: what's professional torment for a scientist is the defining image of life for a poet.
So what actually happens to the sky over St. Petersburg every summer? The sun does set — that part's true. But it sets so shallowly, dips so little below the horizon, that its light keeps scattering through the atmosphere all night long. No real darkness, no astronomical night. Just one long, impossibly slow evening. St. Petersburg sits at a latitude of about fifty-nine and nine-tenths degrees north — roughly six or seven degrees south of the Arctic Circle. Not quite far enough for the sun to stay up all day, the way it does at true polar latitudes. But the geometry is already extreme enough that in summer, the sun's path runs almost parallel to the horizon. It doesn't drop — it slides along the rim of the sky like a coin spinning along the edge of a saucer, dips just barely out of sight, and within minutes starts climbing back up.
The reason behind all this is the tilt of the Earth's axis — about twenty-three and a half degrees off the plane of its orbit. In summer, the Northern Hemisphere leans toward the sun: daylight stretches to its longest, night shrinks to almost nothing. At lower latitudes, the sun still drops steeply to the horizon — twilight is over within an hour. But near the sixtieth parallel, it moves sideways instead of down. It never makes it through all the stages of darkness before a new dawn begins.
There's one more detail I never get tired of. On top of the geometry, the atmosphere itself glows. High above, at the edge of space, oxygen atoms that have spent the day absorbing sunlight spend the night slowly releasing that energy back — as a very faint greenish glow. This happens over the whole planet, every night; in ordinary darkness, only instruments notice it. But here, it settles over an evening that never fully burned down to black. Celestial mechanics builds the frame — the atmosphere fills in the rest of the city's mythology.
Picture it: the air over the city faintly green, barely glowing, quiet. The smell of the Neva River — damp, faintly of the water. And not one truly dark minute.
This exact light is what Dostoevsky built his novella "White Nights" around — the story of a man who lives almost entirely in the city's twilight. There, the white night isn't just a backdrop; it's a state of mind. A man with nowhere to hide his hopes, because darkness simply never comes. Pushkin uses the same summer light differently — as an emotional backdrop for moments when the line between order and transgression blurs. Both understood: this light doesn't just illuminate. It exposes.
And this light genuinely rewrites the body's clock. Melatonin — the hormone that signals the body to sleep — is produced in darkness and suppressed by light. When there's simply no darkness, the signal never arrives on schedule: people go to bed later and later, sleep less, yet feel wide awake. That's the source of the city's famous summer insomnia — in June, St. Petersburg seems to forget when it's supposed to sleep.
And the raised bridges turn that forgetfulness into a real scheduling adventure. Miss your crossing, and you're stuck wandering the wrong side of the river until morning. A ritual born not from tradition, but straight out of astronomy and engineering.
Locals still argue over whether the white nights have turned yellower because of city light pollution. The phenomenon lives on at once in telescopes, in poetry, and in the bridge-raising schedule. The astronomers never did get their dark June night. Dostoevsky, on the other hand, got exactly the light he needed.
