Imagine spending fifteen hundred years on a construction project — and never once leaving a note explaining why. That's Stonehenge, in a nutshell.

But let's take it apart. The people who started this, around three thousand years before our era, weren't druids — that's a much later myth. Genetic testing has shown they were Neolithic farmers who'd crossed over from continental Europe. People whose lives depended on the harvest — and so, on the sky. And they built that sky right into the stones: the monument's main axis points precisely at the sunrise on the summer solstice. Look straight down the central avenue, and that's no accident — it's intention.

But here's the paradox. In the nineteen-sixties, astronomer Gerald Hawkins declared Stonehenge an ancient observatory, capable of predicting eclipses. Then, in twenty twenty-three, a team of astronomers ran the numbers again — and politely pointed out that as a precise calendar, it simply doesn't work. The sky connection is real, but it looks more ritual than engineering.

And there's something else. People were buried here. Cremated remains from different eras point to an ancestor cult that lasted centuries. Nearby, archaeologists have found traces of enormous feasts. So this one site was a cemetery, a temple, and a seasonal gathering place, all at once — an odd combination to us, though maybe not to the people who built it.

Stonehenge has never been fully solved. It keeps getting rewritten. And every summer solstice, thousands of people still gather here to watch the same sunrise their ancestors watched five thousand years ago — as if checking whether anything has changed.

Anything at all — a building, a word, a habit you never questioned. moygid dot online.
