Picture this: northern Tanzania, at the foot of the volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai. Dawn breaks over a lake — and the water is blood-red. Across its surface, as if walking on molten metal, move two million flamingos.

Lake Natron is one of the most caustic bodies of water on the planet. Its pH runs from ten and a half to twelve and a half — acidic enough to strip skin. In the shallows, temperatures climb past fifty degrees Celsius. This is, in essence, a hot bath of caustic soda, fed by the Ewaso Ng'iro River and by hot springs near the volcano — a volcano that doesn't erupt ordinary lava, but a rare carbonatite lava rich in soda ash. The name Natron itself comes from an ancient word for that same soda — the substance Egyptians once used to mummify their dead. A coincidence? Not quite.

Animals that wander into the water dehydrate fast and end up sealed in a crust of salt. That's how the lake's famous "statues" are born — birds mummified right where they fell, on the shore. When British photographer Nick Brandt photographed them, they looked so much like eerie sculptures that some viewers assumed the images were staged. People had to go and check for themselves.

The red isn't some strange anomaly — it's living chemistry. Cyanobacteria and algae like spirulina somehow thrive in this poisonous water, and it's their pigment that stains the lake. Flamingos feed on them — and the very same pigments are what turn their feathers pink.

Up to seventy-five percent of the world's lesser flamingo population nests right here. Because the lake is lethal to predators — which makes it, for the birds, the safest place on earth.

The more dangerous a place looks, the safer it turns out to be. That's the logic of Lake Natron.
