Picture early morning in Rajasthan, before the sun turns the stone into a furnace. A monk moves down a dusty road — slow, almost ceremonial. In his hand, a broom of soft feathers. He sweeps the path before every step. Not for cleanliness. So he doesn't crush a single insect underfoot.

This isn't ritual. It's technique.

The Jains have a word for it — ahimsa. Non-harm. Not as a nice slogan, but as an engineering problem. A monk must avoid killing in nine distinct ways: not doing it himself, not encouraging others to do it, not even approving of it in thought. An irritated thought already counts as violence. A cruel joke already counts as violence. Every death of a living thing, even a microscopic one, leaves a kind of karmic residue — one that takes years of austerity to burn away.

Which leads to an unexpected turn. Ploughing a field, for a Jain, means mass killing of the organisms living in the soil. So historically they moved into trade, finance, the jewellery business instead. And today, one of India's most austere religious traditions is, at the same time, one of the country's wealthiest communities.

Mahatma Gandhi said outright that his idea of non-violence as a political force grew, in part, out of Jain doctrine — a quiet, inward discipline that ended up shaking an empire.

Every step carries a cost. The Jains were simply the first to insist on counting it.
