The Tower That Must Never Stand Straight

Italian authorities responded by forming a special task force and bringing in an international team of soil engineers. Their goal was a strange one: reduce the lean, but never remove it.
The method was almost absurdly delicate — engineers extracted soil, millimetre by millimetre, from beneath the tower's higher, northern side. At the same time, lead counterweights were placed on that same side, and the foundation was reinforced with piles and steel cables. By two thousand and one, the tilt had eased from five and a half degrees down to about four. The price tag: roughly two hundred and fifty million dollars.

Today the tower is wired with sensors that track every microscopic shift, day and night — groundwater levels, stone temperature, the smallest tremor. It isn't treated as a monument anymore. It's treated as a patient under permanent watch. And the experts looking after it have made their peace with one thing: they are keeping it falling, on purpose.
