This is where the Catatumbo River meets Lake Maracaibo, in northwestern Venezuela. In the language of the local Barí people, the river's name means "House of Thunder" — and that's not poetry, it's plain geography. Thunderstorms light up the sky here on up to two hundred sixty nights a year. Around two hundred fifty lightning strikes per square kilometre, annually — one of the highest concentrations of electrical activity anywhere on the planet.

The mechanics are straightforward: warm, humid air over the swamps, thick with methane from decaying plant matter, collides with cold mountain winds pouring down from three sides of the Andes. Every evening, as the surface cools, the lightning machine switches back on.

The glow from these storms can be seen from as far as four hundred kilometres away — roughly the distance from London to Amsterdam and back. Spanish sailors in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries steered by that light like a beacon, finding their way to Caribbean ports without a compass. That's how it earned its other name: the "Lighthouse of Maracaibo."

In twenty ten, the lightning vanished for nearly two months — an unusually strong El Niño disrupted the wind patterns. Villages used to that nightly glow found themselves in the dark.

For now, the phenomenon holds on. But its future no longer depends on the Andean winds alone — oil extraction around the lake threatens the very wetland balance that feeds the storm.
