Winter, nineteen eighty-three. A Soviet geologist named Emil Bachurin is walking through a forest in the Perm region, in Russia's Ural mountains — and he stops. When geophysicists finally looked properly, the picture turned out to be entirely down to earth. Compasses spin because of iron ore deposits underground — a miniature version of the kind of magnetic anomaly found elsewhere in Russia's iron-rich regions. The pyramid-shaped mounds people took for ancient megaliths turned out to be slag from an old copper-smelting works. Even the electronics glitches fit the pattern: just magnetic interference from the ground below.

In twenty eighteen, Forbes named Molyobka one of the world's best spots for UFO hunting — right alongside America's Area 51. The tent camps are still there today.
