A Place Where Myth Is Built From Geology
Про любое место или тему — за пару минут, голосом профессора.
Winter, nineteen eighty-three. A Soviet geologist named Emil Bachurin is walking through a forest in the Perm region, in Russia's Ural mountains — and he stops. There, cut into the snow, is a perfect circle, about sixty-two meters across. A sharp, worn path runs around its edge. No footprints leading in. None leading out.
Bachurin filed a report. Locals dug up old stories — of people wandering these woods for weeks, unable to find their way out. The place itself, Molyobka, takes its name from an old word for "prayer stone" — a boulder sacred to the Mansi, an indigenous Siberian people, where offerings were once made to the spirits. UFO hunters simply built on top of a layer of belief that was already centuries old.
The place went nationally famous in nineteen eighty-nine, after a newspaper series ran under the headline "The M-Triangle: Outsiders Don't Walk Here." It was the perfect story for that moment in late-Soviet history — a little bit scientific, a little bit mystical, and safely apolitical. Expeditions poured in, magnetometers in hand, student groups camping out for weeks.
When geophysicists finally looked properly, the picture turned out to be entirely down to earth. Compasses spin because of iron ore deposits underground — a miniature version of the kind of magnetic anomaly found elsewhere in Russia's iron-rich regions. The pyramid-shaped mounds people took for ancient megaliths turned out to be slag from an old copper-smelting works. Even the electronics glitches fit the pattern: just magnetic interference from the ground below.
In twenty eighteen, Forbes named Molyobka one of the world's best spots for UFO hunting — right alongside America's Area 51. The tent camps are still there today.
Maybe the most honest line came from the UFO hunters themselves: "The more instruments we bring — the fewer miracles we find."
