Seven Frozen Giants

Seven stone pillars, thirty to forty-two meters tall, stand on a high plateau in the Northern Ural mountains — roughly the height of a fifteen-story building, only carved from rock, only rising out of open tundra. Nobody built them there. Or did someone?

That's the puzzle of this place. Geology explains the shape, but not the feeling. The pillars are made of quartzite sandstone, a stone hard enough to survive over two hundred million years of erosion. Everything softer around them has long been worn down by wind, ice, and water to the level of the surrounding forest. These seven held their ground — literally the last remnants of peaks from an ancient mountain range, one that once stood far taller than today's Urals.

The Mansi, an indigenous people of this region, considered the plateau forbidden ground — only shamans were allowed to climb it. Their legend tells of seven giants marching out to destroy the Mansi people, until they caught sight of the sacred mountain Yalping-ner. Their leader, seized with terror, hurled his drum onto the neighboring peak, and all seven turned to stone on the spot. That neighboring mountain is still called Koyp — "the drum."

In two thousand eight, the pillars were named one of the seven wonders of Russia. The plateau sits inside the Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today the area is protected by quotas, mandatory permits, and strict rules — guarded precisely because it's so physically fragile.

Getting there is still no small feat: on foot, it's a trek of about two hundred kilometers through river and forest from the village of Yaksha, or a helicopter ride in from Nyrob.

Everyone who's made the walk describes the same moment: you step out of the tree line, and there they are. No warning, no build-up. Mountains, you can explain. This — you can't.
