Bungee jumping is the poster child of modern extreme sport. But what you're about to hear about wasn't born for the adrenaline rush. It was born for the harvest.

Picture a small island in the South Pacific — Pentecost, part of the Vanuatu archipelago. Every year, from April to June, the local men build a wooden tower bound together with vines, up to thirty meters tall — roughly the height of a ten-story building — and dive off it headfirst. The ritual is called Naghol, "land diving." The goal is to graze the ground with your head or shoulders at the very bottom of the fall. By local belief, that touch is what fertilizes the earth and guarantees a good yam harvest.

The tower is rebuilt from scratch every season. The vines have to be freshly cut and damp — dried out, they barely stretch and simply snap. Each jumper chooses and ties his own pair of vines to his ankles. Get the length or thickness wrong, and it's read as a sign from the spirits: you've been refused. Broken bones and spinal injuries aren't rare here, and a bad jumping season is taken as a warning in itself — the yams won't grow.

In nineteen seventy-nine, a group of researchers from Oxford watched a Naghol ceremony — and carried the idea back out into the world. The vines were swapped for rubber cords, and the ritual became a sport played out on cranes and bridges everywhere. The people of Pentecost know this. Tourists now pay hundreds of dollars just to watch — but they aren't allowed to jump. The heart of the ceremony stays exactly where it belongs.

The adrenaline is what the world took from Naghol. The bond with the land is what Pentecost kept for itself.
