Seeds for the End of the World

This vault was designed to stay shut. That's its whole point — and its strange beauty.
Picture a mountain on Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago roughly thirteen hundred kilometers from the North Pole — about the distance from London to Moscow. Inside, a tunnel cut into permafrost, held at around minus eighteen degrees. Norway committed to building it in two thousand and four; construction began in two thousand and six, and the doors opened on the twenty-sixth of February, two thousand and eight. Less than twenty years ago.
The vault was built to hold four and a half million seed samples. Right now it stores more than one million three hundred thousand, sent in from almost every country on Earth. Each batch is a signed, numbered copy of someone's unique crop variety. This isn't a warehouse. It's an archive of everything humanity has ever grown to eat.
It's funded by the Norwegian government, the international Crop Trust, and major donors — including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. No single country owns it. No company profits from it. It exists purely through global cooperation.
And here's the part that matters most: this vault has already done its job for real. In two thousand and fifteen, war in Syria destroyed a seed bank in Aleppo. That was the first time anyone withdrew samples from Svalbard — to rebuild what had been lost. This isn't insurance against some science-fiction apocalypse. It's a backup against disasters that are painfully real.
In February two thousand and twenty-five, the collection grew by roughly fourteen thousand more samples from twenty-one seed banks — sorghum from Sudan, rice from Thailand, hardy northern trees from Sweden.
Somewhere in that ice sits the food humanity has been growing for thousands of years — and quite possibly the food it will still be growing after the next disaster strikes.
The world is enormous and one question is enough to start. moygid dot online.
