In nineteen ninety-one, a Vietnamese farmer named Ho Khanh stumbled onto a hole in a mountainside deep in the jungle. Cold air poured out of it, and somewhere below, water roared. He turned around and walked home — he had no rope.

That, in one line, is the whole history of exploration.

British cavers didn't reach it until the late two thousands. What they found was Son Doong's main passage: two hundred metres high, a hundred and fifty metres wide. Slide a forty-storey skyscraper inside, and there'd still be room above its roof. This isn't a chamber — it's a street. An underground street, complete with a river, gravel beaches, and its own weather.

The fog in there is real fog. Warm jungle air drops through collapsed sections of the ceiling, meets the cold air trapped below, and clouds form right at your feet. The cave breathes them back out into the forest.

Where sunlight reaches the floor through those same collapses, a forest has taken root — trees, undergrowth, its own soil, its own microclimate. Explorers named it the "Garden of Edam." One of the first people through described walking in total darkness, then suddenly seeing daylight and treetops ahead. His mind refused to accept it.

A stalagmite nicknamed "the Dog's Paw" rises eighty metres — taller than most cathedral spires. And even now, no one has mapped the whole cave.

Getting there costs thousands of dollars, takes several days of trekking, and comes with a waiting list. A plan to run a cable car up to it was blocked by scientists. Good — for once, ambition lost.

Son Doong is a reminder that the Earth still keeps rooms it has never shown anyone.

An episode like this takes about two minutes to make: name a topic, and the rest is done for you. moygid dot online.
