Here's the paradox: the most alien-looking place on Earth isn't a glimpse of the future. It's the past. A deep, prehistoric past that simply never got around to ending.

Picture a scrap of an ancient supercontinent — Gondwana, the landmass that broke apart to form Africa, South America, and beyond — one splinter of it drifted off and got stranded in the Indian Ocean, like a rough draft its author forgot to throw away. That's Socotra. Of the island's eight hundred plant species, more than a third exist nowhere else on the planet. A third! Biologists don't mince words about it: part of this flora is a living leftover from ecosystems that vanished from the mainland millions of years ago.

Picture the dragon's blood tree — that strange mushroom-shaped thing, a trunk topped with an umbrella of branches. It grows at around six to seven hundred metres above sea level, and climbing just one more metre takes it twenty to thirty years. The oldest specimens, local guides estimate, are eight hundred to a thousand years old. And its red resin — known as "dragon's blood" — spent two thousand years doing double, even triple duty: an antiseptic for Roman gladiators, a pigment in medieval icons, a folk remedy for upset stomachs. One tree, three careers, no résumé required.

Right beside it stands the bottle tree, delicate pink flowers sitting atop a barrel-shaped trunk swollen with stored water — fragility paired with absurd hoarding instinct. Taking its seeds off the island is strictly forbidden. The authorities understand something simple: the only way to keep a wonder a wonder is to stop it from becoming a souvenir.

And here's one more oddity: the island has almost nothing dangerous living on it. No snakes, no venomous insects, no predators. Nature, it seems, got so absorbed in botany here that it simply forgot to bring in anything with teeth.

Socotra is a place where the past outlived the present. Whether it outlives the future is still an open question.
