Winter, eighteen fifty. The shore of Skaill Bay in Scotland's Orkney Islands — hit by a storm so fierce it tears the turf clean off a hillside. Underneath: stone walls. Whole rooms. Shelves, beds, cupboards — all carved from slabs of stone. The local landowner, William Watt, figured he'd stumbled on an old Viking settlement. Between the houses run drains with traces of plumbing. Inside, stone channels carried water. No weapons anywhere, no fortifications. For a Neolithic settlement in northern Europe, that's rare.

For years people called it the "Scottish Pompeii" — as if one storm had buried it all in a single night. But the sediment layers tell a slower story: the sea creeping closer, soil washing away, the climate turning harsher. People left gradually. That storm in 1850 was just the final page of a long environmental drama.

Today it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The coastline is being reinforced. The dating keeps getting refined. The questions remain.

Five thousand years on, and those stone shelves are still standing exactly where they were built.
