A Jar of Names Instead of a Grave

Here's a paradox that won't let go. Two thousand five hundred names — and Irena Sendler herself never once spoke that number. It doesn't appear in her own writings. It's the tally of an entire underground network, one where she was the central thread, but never the only one.

Irena grew up in a home where helping poor Jewish neighbors was simply daily life. Her father, a physician named Stanisław Krzyżanowski, treated patients other doctors turned away — and died of typhus, caught from the very people he was treating. His words, "if someone is drowning, you jump in," became almost a will to her.

She entered occupied Warsaw's Jewish ghetto through its gates posing as a sanitation inspector. Infants were smuggled out in toolboxes, hidden under piles of laundry. Children were given new names — and some of the boys spent weeks repeating a stranger's name out loud, so they wouldn't slip up on the street.

She kept her records on thin strips of paper — a child's Jewish name, their new Polish name, the address where they were hidden — and buried them in glass jars in a friend's garden, under an apple tree, on Lekarska Street. Burying them there, away from her own home, meant less risk if the Gestapo came searching.

After the war, the two women knelt in that same garden and pieced apart the water-damaged strips. One name, the story goes, was recovered only because Irena remembered a child's face — by a single small physical feature.
