Take a man at the peak of his career — famous, adored, at the very top — and ask him: what now? Most people would say: more of the same. Schweitzer answered differently.

He'd made a pact with himself back in his youth. Until thirty: music, theology, science. After thirty: give his life to others. Not when a crisis hit, not when a war came — on his own inner clock. And that's exactly what he did.

By thirty he was one of Europe's leading interpreters of Bach — writing about him as if he could hear the man think out loud. Onstage he'd tell the audience, "I play Bach the way he would have spoken about God." The hall would go still. Then word got around: this man was giving it all up — to sit down with medical textbooks.

What set it off was a single line in a missionary journal: Equatorial Africa was short of doctors. Not a calling, not fate — just a fact. But Schweitzer read it as a personal summons.

He built a hospital at Lambaréné, in Gabon. The nineteen fifty-two Nobel Peace Prize he poured almost entirely into concrete, timber, and medicine. In letters to a friend he wrote like a bookkeeper — so many meters of roofing, so many patients sheltered beneath it.

At night, after surgery, he'd sit down at the organ in a small chapel. Bach mixed with the hum of tropical insects. Picture that sound — hot air, wet darkness, and suddenly, a fugue.

His cousin, once removed, was Jean-Paul Sartre. One man thought about freedom. The other, about reverence for life — and this one built things.

Reverence isn't a state of mind. It's a decision made fresh, every single day.

Anything at all — a building, a word, a habit you never questioned. moygid dot online.
