A Drawing for a God — or a Boss

The furrows carved into Peru's Nazca desert run, on average, twenty-five to thirty centimeters deep. Workers simply scraped away the dark surface crust and exposed the pale ground underneath. That's the whole secret behind this "great mystery." No metal, no wheels, no advanced technology — just extremely disciplined workers and very skilled surveyors.

And the discipline here is no small thing. More than thirteen thousand straight lines, hundreds of trapezoids, a dozen and a half large figures — a whale, a monkey, a spider, a bird with a wingspan stretching hundreds of meters. All of it spread across a strip of desert more than fifty kilometers long — about the distance from one end of Greater London to the other. The lines run strictly parallel, at fixed angles, as if someone had drawn across the desert floor with a giant surveying instrument.

The real question is: why? And that's where it gets interesting. Most of these figures can't be seen from the ground at all. They're visible only to a god — or to whoever's standing up on the high ground. Archaeologist Bill Isbell put forward an uncomfortable theory: the lines were a tool of power. The ruling elite had people move stones for hours, building an image the workers themselves would never see in full. You know that feeling — pouring yourself into something enormous and never getting to see the whole picture? Here, that feeling was built directly into the ground.

Another theory points to ritual paths leading to water. In this bone-dry climate, some of the lines appear to trace underground water sources. Walk what looks like a picture, and you're actually walking a route between sacred springs.

The drawing was never meant for an audience. The drawing was the act itself. Maybe that's what real prayer has always looked like.
