On August twenty-first, nineteen eleven, staff at the Louvre assumed the painting had simply been taken off for photographs. Nobody raised the alarm. It was an amateur painter, Louis Béroud, who did — he'd come to the museum to sketch and found only an empty rectangle on the wall. That's how the world learned the Mona Lisa was gone.

The thief was Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian handyman — not a professional criminal, but a glazier's assistant who, shortly before the theft, had himself helped install protective glass in the Louvre's galleries. He'd spent the night hidden in a museum storeroom, and in the morning simply lifted the panel off the wall, slipped it out of its frame, and walked out with the painting tucked under his work coat. No elaborate scheme — just knowledge of the staff staircases and a habit of carrying glass panels through the building.

For the two years the painting stayed missing, the Louvre left the empty frame hanging in its place. That bare patch of wall became the image everyone remembers from the whole affair. Newspapers ran photos of "the hole," and crowds lined up just to look at the absence.

When the painting turned up and was returned, it toured Florence, Rome, and Milan first — crowds, headlines, official speeches, before it went back to Paris. By the time it returned to the Louvre, it was no longer just "a portrait of a Florentine lady" — it was a famous escapee coming home.

And the glass that now keeps it almost out of reach — bulletproof, climate-controlled — traces back to the very same glazier's trade practiced by the man who once stole it.

The world is enormous and one question is enough to start. moygid dot online.
