Look at them. Two small creatures behind glass — almost toy-like, so small it seems impossible: these were the bodies that withstood the g-forces of a rocket launch, circled the Earth seventeen times, and came back alive. Belka and Strelka. Their coats were light-colored — chosen on purpose, so the camera could pick them out clearly.

Before them came Laika. On the third of November, nineteen fifty-seven, she was launched aboard Sputnik Two — and no one ever intended to bring her back. The capsule wasn't built for a return at all. For years, the official story was that she died peacefully after a few days in orbit. But declassified records tell a different story: a fault in the temperature control system sent the cabin above forty degrees, and she died of overheating just a few hours after launch. One of the engineers, Anatoly Blagonaravov, admitted in two thousand two that many people who worked on the program carried the guilt for the rest of their lives.

Belka and Strelka did come home. By comparing their heart rates and how they reacted to shadows crossing the capsule window, scientists drew conclusions about how a human nervous system might hold up in space. One of Strelka's puppies was later given as a gift — Khrushchev sent it to Jacqueline Kennedy. The puppy, named Pushinka, lived out a long life at the family's home.
