The Cap Travels Separately

Pick up a plastic bottle. Any bottle. Now look at the cap and the neck below it. Same clear look, same lightness, same shape where they meet. They look like one thing.
They're not. In much of Russia, and in a growing number of places, people are asked to unscrew the cap and put it in a separate container. Sorters don't ask for this out of spite.
The bottle is almost always PET. The cap is high-density polyethylene or polypropylene. Different plastics, and they melt at different temperatures. You might guess it's a factory being cheap with materials. It isn't. The cap has to be springy, so the thread holds and nothing cracks when you twist it. The bottle has to be clear and easy to make light. Each material is right for its job.
Now drop a cap into the melt with the bottles, and something goes wrong. A whole batch of good plastic turns brittle. Nobody can use it. One small cap ruins a lot.
So the caps travel on their own. And in Russia, since two thousand sixteen, there's a campaign that gives that trip a purpose. It's called "Dobrye kryshechki", which means "Kind Little Caps".
The math is simple. One kilogram is about four hundred and fifty caps. Each weighs around two and a half grams. You can't feel the difference in your hand. A recycler feels it at once.
People bring the caps in. They're delivered to a plant, and the plant weighs the batch and pays a charity foundation real money for it. The foundation spends that money on wheelchairs and equipment for foster children with developmental disabilities. Over the years, the campaign has collected hundreds of tonnes of caps.
And the plastic itself gets a second life, just not a see-through one. Buckets. Crates. Benches. There's one in the city of Volgograd, built from caps that visitors carried to an exhibition themselves.
So look at the cap in your hand again. Two and a half grams. Alone, it changes almost nothing.
But nobody sends them alone. They go together, by the kilogram, by the tonne. And together they turn into a bench you can sit on. Into a wheelchair. Into someone's help.
