Fifteen forty-one. The Spanish explorer Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca is making his way up a river, chasing rumors of golden cities. And then, ahead of him, a white wall rises out of nowhere. Not a cliff. Not mist. Water, falling straight out of the sky. His men couldn't move for hours — not from exhaustion, just from the noise, and from not being able to make sense of the scale. He never found his gold. What he found instead, honestly, is more interesting.

This isn't one waterfall — it's two hundred and seventy-five of them. A horseshoe nearly three kilometers wide, split between two countries, Argentina and Brazil. And each side is convinced it got the better deal: Argentina holds most of the cascades, but Brazil gets the panorama — the whole scene laid out at once, like walking into a theater with the curtain already up. When Eleanor Roosevelt first saw it, all she said was: "Poor Niagara." That's the entire postcard, right there.

The main cascade is called the Devil's Throat, and that's not a poetic stretch. At peak flood, one and a half million liters of water pass through it every second — roughly an Olympic swimming pool, emptied out, every single second. At its strongest moments, Iguazu hits about two and a half times the force of Niagara. In twenty eleven it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, and by the look of it, that's one contest where the winner was never really in doubt.

The name Iguazu comes from the Guarani people, and it translates simply as "big water." No metaphor needed. Just a plain statement of fact.
