Look at the horizon — that stretch where the sky seems a little too bright. That's not a cloud. That's Elbrus. Two domes, split by a wide saddle five thousand four hundred sixteen metres up.

The western peak climbs to five thousand six hundred forty-two metres, the eastern to five thousand six hundred twenty-one. A difference of twenty-one metres — less than the height of a six-storey building. That's why, from a distance, the two look like twins: one massive double dome rising over the whole Caucasus.

Elbrus is a stratovolcano. Its last eruption was around two thousand years ago, though estimates vary among researchers. Under the glaciers, heat still lingers to this day. The base spans roughly fifteen kilometres across — wider than most cities' downtown cores. This isn't a sharp alpine spike; it's a huge volcanic dome, buried under ice.

The first recorded ascent came in eighteen twenty-nine. Only one member of the entire expedition reached the summit — a local guide from the Kabardian people, Kilar Khashirov. For a long time, his name stayed buried in the European accounts of that climb.

In nineteen forty-two, German mountain troops planted their flag on the summit. Europe's highest point became a flashpoint of wartime politics.

Whether this counts as Europe isn't really a question of altitude. It's a question of where people choose to draw a line on a map. Elbrus stands exactly where it has always stood. The line is a human invention.
